Biography

Rachel was born about 1797 in Wilkes County, Georgia. Her parents were William Simmons and Patience ( maiden name unknown).

She was named in a Deed of Gift along with her sisters and brothers from her father in Wilkes County, Georgia in 1798.

Rachel and her family moved to Baldwin County and later to Putnam County, Georgia.

In June of 1812 war came with Great Britain. The Simmons family had men that served in the Georgia Militia on the Georgia frontier. Rachel had an older brother, Willis, who was in Mississippi at that time and served in the Mississippi Militia. Rachel had another brother Solomon, who also was a soldier in the Georgia Militia.

The war raged on from 1812 to 1815. The war was ended by treat at Ghent in December of 1814. The news of the treaty had not reached America and the British and American forces. The British launched an attack against New Orleans in January of 1815. The American forces under Andrew Jackson defeated the British.

Rachel's father died in 1814 in either Putnam or Jones County.

The estate record of appraisement and sale is in Jones County. Rachel purchased most of the items for sale including a horse and house furniture. See pages 127, 128, and 129.

Rachel married John McKissack in April of 1815 in Putnam County. He had served as a private the during the War of 1812 in the 2nd Regiment of Thomas's Georgia Militia. John was born abt. 1785 in Tennessee.

Rachel's mother was a fortunate drawer in the Georgia Land Lottery for land in Houston County, Georgia while she was living in Jones County. Rachel and her siblings sold the land in 1826 after her mother died.

Rachel and John moved from Georgia to Tallapoosa County, Alabama and are recorded on the 1850 Census in Township 19. Their daughter was also there living with her husband, Littleberry Meeks. Sarah had married Littleberry in 1836 in Putnam County. They moved to Tallapoosa County about 1838. Rachel's brother Solomon had family there too. John W. Simmons a son of Solomon had moved there from Chambers County, Alabama by 1856.

The Meeks family is on the previous page of the census. Littleberry Meeks and Sara Ann McKisic are on the same page with Rachel and John.
