Biography

Jennie (Simmons) Keefe was born in South Carolina.

Jennie was born on December 10, 1901 in Barnwell County, South Carolina to Robert Simeon Simmons and Margaret Anne Crouch.

Jennie Simmons was living in Black Mountain, NC in 1910 according to the Census of that year. Her father is listed as a merchant in a general store and her brother James, 12, works as a News Boy on the street. When her family moved back to Bamberg in 1912, she began attending Bamberg Graded School and is often mentioned in the paper as being on the honor roll. She graduated in May 1918 and was valedictorian. [1]

By the 1920 census, her family is living in Florence where her father is an agent for an insurance company and she as well as her siblings, Wilbur and Mabel, are in college. She graduated from Winthrop College with A.B. in Normal Music. In 1930, the census shows Jennie living as a boarder in a home and teaching in a public school. It is interesting to note that it was illegal for married women to teach in public schools in South Carolina. In December 1938, just a week after her mother passed away, she married John O Keefe in Dillon SC with just the preacher, his wife, and daughter in attendance.[2] Jennie was supporting her mother before her death through her failing health. Three months later she gave birth to her only daughter. Jennie Simmons passed away in 1987 and was buried at Mount Hope Cemetery in Florence, South Carolina. [3]

Jenny Keefe claimed she was taller but she was barely 5 feet tall. She wore a size 5 shoe and she loved shoes! She was very fair but in the 1940s she took medication that turned her skin blue which later became a grey-brown color. She had pretty green eyes and light brown hair. Jenny was a very sweet person who cared deeply for her students and they in turn loved her and kept up with her even after graduation. [4]
