BOY SHOT (1944, October 11). The Lyndhurst Shire Chronicle (NSW : 1897 - 1941; 1944 - 1954), p. 1. Retrieved from http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article144910227 Distressing Accident At Carcoar A tragic death occurred at Carcoar District Hospital on Friday last when a well-known Carcoar boy, Hugh Simmons, passed away as the result of injuries received in a shooting accident. The lad was the youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Simmons, old Carcoar residents, and was 11 years of age. On the Wednesday afternoon previous to his death, he got a pea-rifle from his home with the intention of shooting a magpie that had been troublesome in the locality. Having difficulty with the bolt, he placed it on the ground with the barrel pointing towards his body. Apparently, the bump released the catch, as the weapon immediately exploded. The bullet passed through a belt he was wearing and came out his back. He was immediately taken to Hospital, but despite the best of care the ???d could not be averted. The funeral took place on Saturday afternoon, interment being made in the Church of England portion of Carcoar cemetery. Rev. Pearce being the officiating minister. Sincere sympathy is extended to the bereaved parents and other relatives in their sad loss.
