Merlene was born in 1926. She is the daughter of Merle Simmons and Leona Ford. She passed away in 2007.

Merlene I. Layton, 81, Chanute, died Thursday, August 2, 2007, at the Neosho Memorial Regional Medical Center.

She was born April 30, 1926, in Salina to Merle C. and Leona Ford Simmons. She attended Chanute High School.

She married to Billy Layton on Sept. 4, 1943, in Humboldt. He preceded her in death on Nov. 29, 1994.

She was a homemaker.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Verna Layton, Chanute; a granddaughter and her husband, Brenda and David Burt, Chanute; a grandson, Gary Wiles, Chanute; three great-grandchildren, Josh and Austin Burt and Cristy Thomas; two great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Deloris Bauer, Milwaukee, Wis.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two brothers and two sisters.

Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Penwell-Gabel Johnson Chapel in Chanute. Burial will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Humboldt under the direction of Penwell-Gabel Johnson Chapel.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the V.F.W. Auxiliary or the Red Cross Blood Mobile in care of the funeral home.
