Private Beloni Simon served in the Spanish Louisiana Militia in the War of 1812 Service started: Unit(s): Captain DeClouet's Regiment Service ended:
Beloni Simon, a son of Jean Baptiste Simon and Marie Madeleine Aucoin, was born October 13, 1797 in St. Martinville, Attakapas, Spanish colonial Louisiana.[1]
He was a first generation Creole: born in Louisiana of French parents.
Beloni was 15 when the U.S. declared war on England in 1812. Two years later the U.S. was not faring well in the war when England decided to crush the upstart republic by taking control of the Mississippi River at New Orleans. Like many of his friends and neighbors, Beloni descended from French Acadian settlers who had been forced out of their homes by the British. They were not going to see that happen again. Beloni and practically every man of age in Louisiana joined the militia. Beloni enlisted as a private with Captain DeClouet's Regiment, which saw action at the Battle of New Orleans from December, 1814 through January 8, 1815.[2]
The war officially ended (for the second time) in March of 1815. Beloni went home to St. Martinville, and on July 8, 1817 he married Pelagie Boudreaux.[3][4]
Three years later, in 1820, he was counted on the census in St. Martin Parish as a farmer, age 16-25 (he was 23); with a female age 16-23 (Pelagie was 20), and no children. Nearby were the farms of his parents and all of his brothers.[12]
Beloni Simon died at age 39 in Lafayette, Louisiana, on April 25, 1836. [citation needed] Four children born of the marriage were named as heirs in his succession, dated 21 November 1838.[13]
