Biography

Jacques Simon, father of Guillaume Simon, was probably under twenty years old when he married Marguerite Vincens in 1730 since he needed the consent of his father to marry. His estimated birth year therefore can be no earlier than 1710. From the marriage documents at the Bordeaux Archives, we learn that his family probably came from the parish of St. Leger a few miles up river from Bordeaux. We also learn from this record that he had a brother named Raimond, and that their father was named Joseph.

[Translation by Ernest Simon:]

"Extract of marriage records, St. Michael Parish, Bordeaux On 12 September 1730 after their engagement and the publication of three banns at the sermon of the parish mass on three consecutive Sundays or holy days, having found no impediments, civil or canonical, the same publication having been made in st. Leger Parish in the Diocese of Condom as appears from the certificate of Mr. Pericot, priest of Condom dated the seventh of this month, I married Jacques SIMON, cooper, and Marguerite VINCENS. The said groom had the consent of his father, and the said bride acted in her own right, her father and mother being deceased, both residents of this parish. Done in the presence of Joseph SIMON, father of the groom; Raymond Simon, brother of the groom; Pierre Vincens, brother of the bride; and Pierre Leveille, who all attested to the freedom of the parties to marry and to their residence, and who signed, except Leveille and those who did not know how to sign. (Signed) Jacques SIMON, groom, J. SIMON, R. Simon, Regnard, vicar. This is a certified copy of Act No. 728, Register GG 482, on file in the Municipal Archives. Bordeaux, 27 March 1984"

At the time of their marriage in 1730 both Jacques and Marguerite were parishioners of St. Michel de Bordeaux, and Jacques was already working as a professional cooper. Fourteen years later, at the birth of their son Guillaume, they were still in the St. Michel congregation and Jacques was still a professional cooper. It is likely that they must have had other children between 1730 and 1744 but no records are known of those births.
