Family Stories

From Sherry in the records of Edward worms and Gisela Sigity given to Lila Olds Worms: GREAT GRANDMA (ELIZABETH) WORMS:

Ed's mom would get both Herbert and Harold swaddled with a sugar teat (homemade cloth soother) in their ouths and with one baby jammed under each arm would rock the dickens out of them to get them to sleep because they were fussy. Apparently children and babies did not argue with her. This woman had 17 children that lived and still outlived her husband. Sherry wallace has a picture of her, which I Sherry Warren woudl love to see.

Great Grandma Worms also made moonshine. She had a pit that was dug under the big (really big) washtub out in the yard. On washday there was a fire lit under the tub to boil the clothes. The still was under th etub so the fire would run the still as well. She and Grandma (Gisela) made enough moonshine to buy the things they couldn't make themselves during the depression, particularly shoes. She never got caught by the revenue officer, even though she was checked many times because they couldn't smell the mash cooking over top of the lye that was steaming in the washtub and never thought to look under the tub.
