Biography

The 1900 U.S. Census recorded Mary E. Simonds, age 16 and a student, born in May 1884, in the household of her parents William B. Simonds, age 72 and a farmer, and Artha E. Simonds, age 60, in Peru, Vermont. Also sharing the household were her brother Eugene C. Simonds, 28 and a farm laborer; her sister Ellen M. Burroughs, 35 and a school teacher; and Ellen's daughters Edna J Burroughs, 11, and Evelin A Burroughs, 7, both students.[1]

Mary E. Simonds was married to Joseph E. Farnum in Peru, Vermont, on 1 January 1906. According to the marriage card, she was 21 years old, a native of Peru and a daughter of William B. Simonds, also born in Peru, Vermont) and Arthea Mason, born in Winhall, Vermont. The marriage was performed by F. E. Coburn, Baptist clergyman.[2]

The 1940 U.S. Census recorded Joseph E. Farnum, age 56, and his wife Mary E. Farnum, age 55, in Peru, Vermont. Sharing their household were unmarried son Edward S. Farnum 20;Mary's brother (Joseph's brother-in-law) Eugene C. Simonds, age 68 and divorced, and 6-year-old Christine Batchelder, recorded as a lodger. All were born in Vermont and had lived in the same house in 1935. Joseph was a contractor in the home construction business. Mary had been educated through high school; her husband reported an 8th-grade education.[3]

The 1950 U.S. census recorded 67-year-old Joseph E. Farnum, and his 65-year-old wife Mary E. Farnum in Peru, Vermont. Joseph was a carpenter in the house building business. Mary's brother Eugene C. Simonds, age 79, was also in the household. All were born in Vermont.[4]
