Filippus was elected to be the earl of the Baglers in 1204, and was made their king in 1207. After the truce at Kvitsøy in 1208, he was granted rule of Viken and Opplandene under the suzerainty of king Inge II Bårdsson.
His parents were lendermann Simon Kåresson and Margareta Arnesdotter.
Married in 1209 to Kristin Sverresdatter (died 1213), daughter of King Sverre Sigurdsson (ca. 1150-1202) and Queen Margrete Eriksdotter (ca. 1155-1209).
Nephew to queen Ingerid Ragnvaldatter (about 1100-ca. 1170); Nephew to Bishop Nikolaus Arnesson (ca. 1145-1225).
Filippus issued the oldest known letter in Norse where the original is still preserved.
