Obituary

Died November 5, 1885

Three score and ten years is the allotted span of life, but grandfather Simonton passed seventeen years beyond that. He died, Thursday, at the home of his son 'Andy', after a long period of feeble health. The funeral services took place Friday, Elder Holton officiating in a short talk at the home. Dr. A. M. Miller, Sinnett Rankin, Simon Rock and John S. Small were the pall bearers.

Adam Simonton was born at Loveland, Clermont County, Ohio, October 8, 1798. That county was on the frontier then and swarmed with lurking savages, privations and hardships. Mr. Simonton suffered his share of these.

At the age of fifteen, after the garrison had made their gallant defense of Ft. Meigs and were relieved to go home, he was placed in charge of a detachment to escourt [sic] home the company commanded by his father. The escourt group was composed of lads about his own age, and they treaded the two hundred miles from the Ohio River to the Fort, and back, with nothing to guide them but blazed trees. Ambushed Indians threatened them all along their journey, but the lads faltered not, and guided their fathers safely home.

He married Miss Elizabeth Ford in Warren County, Ohio, on May 24, 1826. They came to Illinois in 1863. In 1820 he cast his first vote, and never failed to vote at every presidential election until his death, and was always identified with Democracy.

Nine children and the aged wife survive. His death is the first one that has occurred in the family for thirty eight years. James of Edgar, Nebraska, Theophilus of Miamisburg, Ohio, and John of Paxton, were present for the funeral.
