William Simpson was born in the Colony of New South Wales (1788-1900)
New South Wales flag
William Simpson was born in New South Wales, Australia

Birth

William was born in 1826 in New South Wales. Parents Thomas Simpson and Jane (unknown)., however on his marriage certificate he states Janes Maiden name as "Butler". [1]

Baptism

St Marys Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. [2]

Family Knowledge: Grew up in the Queanbeyan area and relocation into Victoria unknown. (William and his brothers all relocated to Victoria as the family story goes).

Victoria Arrival

1842 based on death certificate and marriage information - arrived in Victoria about 17 or 18 years old.

Marriage

William married Mary Broderick 27 Apr 1858. Certificate states his age at the time of his marriage to be 31, Mary is 21. Williams profession is a farmer and her was born in New South Wales, Mary was born in Eniskellan, Ireland, William states his parents as "Thomas Simpson - farmer, and Jane Butler). William signs with his mark. Mary signs her name, and states her parents as Edward Broderick (farmer) and Margaret Cullen. one of the witnesses is "Patrick Cullen/Collins" who writes with a very wobbly signature. [3]

Death

He passed away in 1890, at age 65 from stomach cancer. The death certificate states that he lived 48 years in Victoria prior to his death. Ten children are named on the death certificate, and Mary Broderick was the informant on the death certificate (interesting observation she failed to include Stephen who died in infancy but where there is a birth and death index for him). [4]

Obituary

-One of the oldest residents of the Bairnsdale district, Mr William Simp-son, died on Friday last at Forge Creek. The deceased, whose age was 59 years, was highly-respected for his kind and generous disposition. His remains were interred in the Bairns-dale cemetery on Sunday last, and were followed to the grave by a large number of mourners. The Rev Father Verlin conducted the burial service, and Mr W. B. Giles had charge of the mortuary arrangements. [5]

Funeral Notice. THE friends of the late William Simp-son are respectfully invited to follow his remains to their last resting place, the Bairnsdale Cemetery. The funeral will move from his late residence at Forge Creek, to-morrow (SUNDAY), 25th inst., at 2 o'clock, p.m. WM. H. GILES, Undertaker. [6]

Burial

23 May 1890 • Cemetery, Bairnsdale, Victoria Death Date: 23 May 1890 Late Residence: Forge Creek Burial Date: 24 May 1890 Cemetery: Bairnsdale Cemetery. Section: C of E. Cemetery Location: Bairnsdale, Victoria. Remarks: Re-open #4424. Reg No. 841. Occupation: Carrier. [7]

Tombstone/Headstone: ": In loving memory of William Simpson who died 23 May 1890 aged 65 years; also his beloved wife Mary died 8 March 1900 aged 61" [8]

Probate

Grant Date10/09/1890, Profession "Grazier". Mary (widow) made executor of the will (before Supreme Court). William illiterate but in sound mind at the writing of the will and signs with his 'mark". He leaves two hundred and ninety eight pounds and two shillings and sixpence to be distributed to his children , named in the will as: John Broderick Simpson; Rosanna Simpson, Margaret Simpson, William Simpson, Mary Ellen Simpson, Jane Simpson, Thomas Edward Simpson, Robert Simpson, Mabel Grace Simpson and Francis Cully Simpson. Reading the will - it appears he led a frugal life. There was some mortgage on the farm and some dishonoured bills to be repaid from the Estate. there were no trinkets or such and the only things of value (beside the land) is the tools. Research Notes

Research challenge: and Family story as told to Larina Harper I was told by my father (now in his eighties) that he had 'always been told' that the Simpson line had entered Victoria from New South Wales, but they had been in the Australian Capital Territory for a while. he was also told 'all the brothers settled in the same area' after entering Victoria (around Lucknow and Bairnesdale). I set about looking for death certificates for Simpsons with parents Thomas and Jane and narrowed down a number of the brothers, who state parents as Thomas and Jane;

Thomas b. 1827 New South Wales Australia BDM Births Volume Number V18271475 127 parents Thomas and Jane. Death cert states parents are William and Jane Victoria BDM Deaths 4922/1857.

Robert Simpson. b. 1829 New South Wales BDM Births Volume Number: Volume NumberV18291599 125. Parents Thomas and Jane. death 1889, states parents names as Thomas Simpson and Jane Murphy. Victoria BDM Deaths: 14662

I have obtained certificates for BDM of Thomas Simpson and Jane Butler (those that travelled to the Bairnesdale area). it looks like Thomas and Jane also relocated to Bairnesdale and may have died there but i don't have all the information together yet. The problem with the "Murphy connection' is with Williams brother John Simpson who was illiterate and for some reason on his marriage certificate his mother is named as Ellen Murphy.. but the death certificate (outlining the same wife and clearly the same person) refers to his parents as being Thomas and Jane Simpson (Maiden name unknown).

New Challenge: There are (2) birth registrations(832v127 & 848v128) in the NSW BDM for a William Simpson born to parents Thomas and Jane in the year 1826 (and none for 1827). I have gained transcriptions of both of them - and they both carry the same information, Event: Baptism CHILD: Name: William Birth Place: Not Stated Date of Ceremony: 2 February, 1826. Where Ceremony performed: Not Stated Where registered: Not Stated PARENTS Father: Thomas Simpson Mother: Jane Murphy Abode: Not Stated Quality or Profession: Not Stated SPONSORS: Owen Boyan Sydney, 26 June 1827. BY WHOM THE CEREMONY WAS PERFORMED: Not Stated. ROMAN CATHOLIC.

As both baptismal records carry the same information I have sent a query through to NSW BDM. It doesn't seem likely that the same baptismal information would be linked to two seperate records and logic says there must be an error in the transcription. Plus the other conflict remains - why has William Siimpson here referred to his mother on his marriage certificate by the name of Jane Buller (or Butler) if he knew that she was named Jane Murphy?

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with William by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with William:
