Biography

Thomas Simpson was born 17 Sep 1812 in Manchester into a Quaker family. He was the son of Martin and Mary Simpson. His father was a fustian manufacturer.

Thomas was educated at Ackworth School, and worked as a fustian manufacturer in Manchester like his father.

In 1836, Thomas tried to resign his membership in Hardshaw East Monthly Meeting, the Quaker group he belonged to, but they wouldn't accept his resignation.

On September 20th 1837, Thomas married Maria Gillett at the Friends' Meeting House in Street, Somerset.

Hardshaw East accepted Thomas' resignation on 15 March 1838.

Their eldest child Albert was born on 20 Jul 1838 in Chorlton upon Medlock.

Their second child Emily was born 23 Aug 1840 in Manchester.

Their third child Maria Jane was born 1 May 1842.

Their fourth child John Edward was born 16 Feb 1844 in Manchester.

Their fifth child Oswald was born 27 Nov 1845.

Their sixth child Mary Ellen was born 28 Jun 1848.

Their seventh child Harold was born 8 Apr 1850.

Their eighth child Louis Herbert was born 15 Feb 1853 in Chorlton upon Medlock.

They seem to have moved from Chorlton on Medlock to Preston between 1853 and 1855.

Their ninth child Percy was born 10 May 1855 in Preston, Lancashire.

Mary Ellen died on 24 Dec 1855, aged 7 in Preston.

Their tenth child Howard was born 23 Oct 1857. He died on 17 Aug 1858, just short of ten months old.

Their eleventh child Gertrude was born in 1860 in Preston.

Harold died on 11 Feb 1872, aged 21.

Maria Jane died on 18 Oct 1879 in London, aged 37.

Thomas died on 19 Jan 1885 at his home, The Arches, Clevedon, Somerset, aged 72. He was buried on the 23rd in Nightingale Cemetery, Godalming, in the unconsecrated section.

Maria died on 24 Jan 1909 at Sunnyside Hydro, Southport, Lancashire, where she was living, aged 92. She was buried on the 28th with Thomas.
