Mary (Simpson) Rickaby was born in Gilling, Yorkshire, England.

Birth

Mary Ann Simpson was born 1830 in Gilling, Yorkshire. She was the daughter of Richard Simpson and Jane (Plummer) Simpson. No birth/baptism data has been located, but her birth shortly after her parents marriage and the 1841 and 1891 Census data confirm the birth and parentage. The Google Image for the Ampleforth area[1] shows the close relationship of Gilling, Ampleforth and Helmsley noth of York in Yorshire, England. All these locations are now in the Howardian Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

The 1841 Census[2] shows that Mary Ann Simpson (age 11) is the daughter of Richard Simpson (age 48) and Jane (Plummer) Simpson

Mary Ann Simpson married[3] Thomas Rickaby in 1852, registered in Helmsley. They had 8 children: Thomas Joseph (born 1855), Mary Jane (born 1857), Richard John (born 1860), Leonard (born 1861), Francis (born 1864), John Henry born 1866), Teresa Elizabeth (born 1867) and William Charles (born 1870).

She is living there with her mother Jane (Plummer) Simpson (age 83) and her sons Francis (age 28) and William ( 21). This record gives her plave of birth as Ampleforth, Yorkshire. This is close to Gilling, Yorkshire as given in earlier Census returns. She is Head of House as her husband Thomas died in 1886.

Death

Mary Ann died[5] in 1902 at Easingwolde, Yorkshire.

Research Notes

The FS record for the marriage has been transcribed incorrectly. Spouse is named as Margaret Rickaby, which is nothing like Thomas, however record seen on Ancestry which shows Thomas Rickaby. The Helmsley record is most probable as Helmsley is just to the north of Gilling in Yorkshire - given in the Census returns as place of birth. 1854 is the most likely date from the BND data although an 1852 date is given on Familysearch.
