Birth

Ona Simpson Heard was born on June 5, 1904[1][2] to Frances Marion Simpson and Mary Ellen Weldon.[3][4][5]

Marriage & Children

She married Loyd "Nip" Asbury Heard[2][6] on December 23, 1923 in Coke, Texas.[7][8] Together they had three children:

Life Events

During the great depression, her and her husband lost their farm and were without a home for a while.[12] This is reflected in the 1930 census. She and her son, John Heard, are listed twice. Ona and John moved in with her younger sister, Oma Simpson Wilson, and Oma's first husband, Onice Wilson.[1] Loyd is not listed on this census, but this was likely due to him working far away. A few weeks later Ona, Loyd, and John found a place to live and were listed as lodgers to the household of Thomas and Kate Yarbro.[13]

Occupation

Margarette was a barber.
Ona owned and ran a barbershop in Crane, Texas. She also served as the shop's barber.[12] When she retired, she handed the business down to her daughter, Juanell.[14]

Christmas

Ona loved Christmas and always made sure to dress her best every year. This is one of her common Christmas outfits she would wear every year.

Death

She passed away on February 5, 1988[5][15] in Crane, Texas and was buried at Crane Memorial Cemetery.[16]

Obituary

CRANE Memorial services for Margaret Lue Ona Heard, 83, of Crane are set for 2:30 p.m. today at Crane Church of Christ with Doug Crane and Bill Fairchild officiating. Mrs. Heard died Friday at her residence. She was born June 5, 1904, in Eastland County and married Loyd Heard in 1925 in Brownwood. He died in 1962. Mrs. Heard was a member of the Crane Church of Christ. She was a barber in Crane for many years. Survivors include a daughter, Juanell Smitherman of Crane; a son, Jimmy Loyd Heard of Quinwood, W.Va.; two sisters, Oma Goddard of Inverness, Fla., and Ova Chandler of Brownwood ; a brother, Al Simpson of Denver, Colo.; five grandchildren and six great grandchildren. The family requests memorials to Crane Church of Christ. Richard Box Funeral Home of Crane is in charge of arrangements.[17]
