Biography

Jane Simpson was born in 1827 in County Tyrone, Ireland to James and Jane (Stewart) Simpson. She married James Hyatt on February 26, 1849, in Ontario.[1] They had eight children in 26 years. She died on February 20, 1907, in British Columbia having lived a long life of 80 years.[2]

"After Jennie Simpson came to Canada she got word that a will was settled at that time she would have to go back to Ireland to claim her portion of the will. She said that she wouldn’t cross the ocean again for any money in the world.

She told my grandma that in Ireland they had a big house with servants and stables of horses. Around they property there was a fence the ones with spears sticking up. When her husband would come home late at nigh after going to the pub he wouldn’t open the gate. He would jump the gate with his horse. She used to tell him not to do this, but he always said that horse could jump anything. But she said but after drinking so much you might fall off the horse. But he wouldn’t stop. One morning she woke up and he wasn’t home they went looking for him. They found him on the fence, he had fallen off the horse on the gate. He was dead.

I don’t know just what happened but I guess she had trouble with the family I guess over money and one day Jennie and her daughter Mary Anne caught a boat for Canada and there she married Jim Hyatt. Grandma said as a little girl Robert Simpson of Simpson’s catalogue would come and visit them. Mary Anne married Henry Reily they lived in Meritt B.C." [3]
