Obituary (Find a Grave[1])

Jesse Simpson, an aged and respected farmer, died yesterday morning at his home near Island Home. He was one of the oldest citizens of the community having attained his eighty-seventh birth day. He was well known throughout the county both by reason of his long residence therein and his excellent standing.

He was the son of Jesse, Sr., and Mary Simpson. He was born in Virginia and went to school in the crude and primitive school houses of the early times.

He assisted his father on the farm until twenty-two years of age after which he was engaged for a short time in cabinet making and then began trading o the Tennessee river. In 1836 Miss Margaret Coker became his wife and two children, a son and a daughter, were born to this marriage; the son died upon becoming a year old and the daughter is the wife of B. S. N. Lore.

Mrs. Simpson died in 1840 and in 1842 Mr. Simpson married his second wife, Miss Mary J Anderson. This marriage resulted in the birth of two sons and four daughters. Since the time of his first marriage Mr. Simpson has been engaged in farming and at the time of his death owned a fine farm of 160 acres above the city on the south side of the river.

He, his wife and family are all members of the Baptist church, he having held the office of deacon for thirty-five years. Mr. Simpson has always been a staunch republican, recognizing in the principles of this party the true foundation of stable government.

Mr. Simpson did not die of Brights' disease as stated by the Sentinel but of paralysis of the bladder. The funeral will take pace this morning at eleven o'clock and the remains will be interred at the Island Home cemetery.
