Biography

John Smorfitt Simpson, son of brush finisher Joseph Simpson of Shakespeare St. and his wife, Mary Baines, was born in Leeds about 1869. [1] Picture of Shakespeare St Leodis A Photographic Archive: Shakespeare St

John was baptised at St Matthew in Leeds on the 16th of June 1878 [2] when about 10 years old. The entry in the register is immediately after that of his nephew, Arthur Leonard Hurd.

By 1881 his family had moved out of the city to Potternewton. [3]

When John grew up he took to the life of a commercial traveller and on the 6th of October 1892 at Christ Church in Leeds he married Ada Weare, daughter of mechanic, Robert Weare. [4]

John and Ada eventually settled in Manchester where they ran a chemist shop.[5][6]

John died on the 17th of February 1948.[7]
