Betty Joyce Simpson Temple, affectionately called "Betty Boop" by those closest to her, was a good and faithful servant to all of her life's callings. She served as a loving daughter, supportive wife, mother and dedicated nurse. 1 was born May 15, 1923 to Jesse and Gertrude Simpson in Harper, Kansas, lived her entire married life in the Black Hill Community near Pleasanton, Texas and left to be with the Lord on September 8, 2008. She was preceded in death by her husband John Elton Temple, as well as her most of her siblings. She is survived by her sister Imogene Taylor of Guthrie, Oklahoma as well as her children. 1 and Elton's legacy is their children, John and Clodene Temple of Heber Springs, Arkansas and Deborah Temple Shearrer of Pleasanton, Texas as well as 8 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, 2 great great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She taught her family the importance of faith, discipline, education and fun (winning almost any game she played). 1 loved to cook, study, create oil paintings, quilt, crochet, sew, play the piano and read. She would often take a dare in the name of fun or competition, leaving her family and friends with some pretty entertaining stories. Most importantly, Betty had a deep faith, knew her Bible in-depth and believed in living her Christian beliefs. Her family remembers her ability to cook and preserve everything under the sun, plus her hospitality to all who entered their home. She was a Proverbs 31 woman. 1
Always an avid student, she became a Licensed Vocational Nurse and worked in the healthcare field for over 30 years. She received her Nursing Home Administrator's license and worked in that arena as well as returning to nursing after the death of her husband. She finally retired from nursing when she was 78 years old, often chuckling that she was older than many of her patients. 1
Betty was a compassionate and dedicated servant to her patients. She took every opportunity to minister to them spiritually, always carrying her small Bible in her pocket. She said that she had prayed with many of them over to the "other side" (heaven). She was known as feisty, bright, strong-willed and not afraid to stand up for herself or other's rights. She was loved and respected by all who worked with her. She too great pleasure in giving away food, money or gifts to people – generous indeed. 1
Visitation is planned for Thursday, September 11 from 5-7 pm, with services planned for Friday, September 12 at 10 am at Hurley Funeral Home in Pleasanton with Pastor Albert Lock officiating.
