Biography

Sarah Sims or Simms was born in 1768 in Henry, Franklin, Virginia, United States.

She married Joseph Bartlett (1765 - 1838).

The first written record of Joseph shows him in Henry County, Virginia in 1787. It is here that it is believed he married a Miss Sims, (possibly Sarah Sims). To this union three children were born, all in Henry County.
1. James, born about 1782
2. John, born about 1788
3. Sarah, born about 1790
Perhaps around 1791 the family moved to Hawkins County, North Carolina which later became part of the state of Tennessee. Joseph obtained a land grant for 50 acres on December 26, 1791 for 50 shillings. It was located on the South side of Holston River. The Holston River was a major route of westward migration running through the middle of Hawkins County.

Some of his neighbors were: Bartlett Sims , Henry Rice, John and Elizabeth Sims, William Rice, Elijah Chisum , John Rice Sr., Thomas Hill, John and Harriet Rice.

It is assumed that Joseph's first wife died in Hawkins County about 1794. Joseph was in a quandary with the three children so he placed them in the custody of their grandmother Sims. Abner Hill's account mentions them staying with their grandmother. Also helping with the children was their aunt, Lucy Chisholm. Abner Hill married Joseph’s daughter Sarah, from his first marriage to Sarah Sims.
