Biography

Bartholomew Sims (aka Simms) was born in 1804 in Keynsham, Somerset, England to Samuel Sims and Sarah (Green) Sims.

Bartholomew Sims, son of Samuel & Sarah, was christened on 6 May 1804 at St John in Keynsham.[1][2][3]

Bartholomew Sims married Elizabeth Malpafs [aka Malpus, Malpass, etc] on 5 Mar 1828 in St James parish, Bristol, Gloucestershire.[4]

Bartholomew and Elizabeth had five children:

  1. Harriet Sims (1829-)
  2. Thomas Sims (1831-)
  3. Henry Sims (1833-)
  4. James Sims (1839-)
  5. William Sims (1846-)
  • Harriet & William were christened with the surname spelled Sims, and the other three were christened with the spelling Simms.

In 1841 Bartholomew Sims (age 35-39, Agricultural Labourer) lived in Keynsham with his wife Elizabeth (30-34 [~39]) and four children: Harriot (7), Thomas (6), Henry (5), and James (2).[5][6]

In 1851 B Sims (age 46, Servant), was recorded at his place of employment, the Brislington House Lunatic Asylum in Brislington, Somerset.[7] Bartholomew's family lived in Keynsham - wife Elizabeth (44 [~49]) and three children: Harriet (21), James (12, Scholar), and William (4).[8]

In 1861 Bartholomew Sims (age 56, Agricultural Labourer) lived in Keynsham with his wife Elizabeth (53 [~59]), son William (15, Servant), and boarder William Blanford (2).[9]

Bartholomew's wife passed away in 1867.

In 1871 Bartholomew Simms (age 68, Labourer) was a boarder in Keynsham in the household of George Babey (35, Railway Porter) - also in the household were George's wife and four children.[10]

In 1881 Bartholomew Sims (age 75, General Labourer (Pauper)) lived in Keynsham - his relationship to head of household was "pauper" so he was presumably in a workhouse or similar institution.[11]

Bartholomew Sims passed away in 1884, aged 83 years. His death was registered in Keynsham in the second quarter of the year.[12]
