Biography

Elijah SIMS was born about 1805 in Virginia and died on 29 May 1883 in Lewis County, West Virginia.[1] He was the son of William SIMS and his first wife, Susan.

  • Note: Elijah's father, William Sims listed his wife's name as Margaret in his will which he wrote on 12 May 1839 in Lewis County, Virginia.[2] He also mentions "children by my first wife" and "children by my second wife" indicating that he had at least two wives during his lifetime. William named "his son, Elijah" as his executor. The name of his first wife, Susan, was listed on the death record of Elijah as Elijah's mother. Susan's maiden name is unknown, but upon examining the marriage records of Harrison County, West Virginia, a record of marriage was found that could be William's second marriage. This was a marriage between William SIMS and Margaret DAVERS in 1824.[3]

A marriage bond was issued on 25 June 1849 and was paid by Elijah SIMMS and Richard G. ROBINSON for the marriage between Elijah SIMMS and Eliza ROBINSON.[4] He married Eliza ROBINSON on 1 July 1849 in Harrison County, Virginia.[5] At the present time, the relationship between Richard G. ROBINSON and Eliza ROBINSON is unknown.

Elijah was about 44 years old when he married Eliza ROBINSON and the ages of the individuals in his 1850 census record point towards him being previously married, but no other marriage record has been located. Further research is needed.

According to the 1850 and 1860 census records, the following individuals were possible children or another close relationship to Elijah SIMS:

  1. Lemuel SIMS (Born: 1829 in Virginia)
  2. James SIMS (Born: 1833 in Virginia)
  3. Granville B. SIMS (Born: 1841 in Virginia)
  4. John W. SIMS (Born: 1843 in Virginia)
  5. Caroline SIMS (Born: 1844 in Virginia)
  6. Mary A. SIMS (Born: 1851 in Virginia)
