Biography

James (Sinclair) Sinclair Master of Caithness is a member of Clan Sinclair.


James Sinclair, First of Murkle was the second son of John SInclair, Master of Caithness and his wife Lady Jean hepburn , and grandson of George, fourth Earl of Caithness.[1]

He was granted he one-half of the lands of Barland of Murkill by his brother, George Sinclair, Earl of Caithness in 1587.[2]

James Sinclair married Elizabeth Stewart, daughter of Robert, Earl of Orkney, a natural son of King James V.[1]

James and Elizabeth had two sons and a daughter:[1]

  1. Sir James Sinclair, his successor, who had a natural son, John Sinclair, first of Assery.
  2. Francis Sinclair, who served in the German wars, and in 1621married Janet, daughter of Alex ander Sutherland of Forss
  3. Agnes, who married John M'Kay of Dirlot and Strathy.
