Life Sketch The following sketch was written in Descendants of John Power and Mary Holloway by Garda M. Hodgson, appearing on page 399, and some subsequent pages.:
Mary Sinclair...was born September 12, 1777 in South Carolina. Her birth place was given on her death record. Her parents, Amos and Mary Sinclair, were living in Rowan County, North Carolina then moved to South Carolina for a short time during the Revolutionary War, where Mary was born. She Married Benjamin Snelling, son of Benjamin Snelling and Elizabeth Page, shortly after her parents moved to Fayette County, Kentucky in about 1791. Benjamin Snelling was born in Fauquier County, Virginia about 1767; he was age 83 when the 1850 census of Bath County, Kentucky was taken. He was a Methodist Episcopal Minister, and traveled in the Lexington Circuit in 1788, then spent a year in the Fairfax County, Virginia Circuit. The following year, he returned to Kentucky where he was assigned to the Madison Circuit for a year then left the ministry to marry and pursue farming. Benjamin and Mary Snelling moved from Fayette County, Kentucky to Montgomery County, Kentucky before 1801. His name was included in the Montgomery County Tax list that year next to John and Thomas Sinclair and Alexander Brown. Mary’s parents had moved to Montgomery County two years earlier. On March 22, 1802, Benjamin Snelling purchased 411 acres of land on Flat Creek in Montgomery County from the executors of George Nicholas, deceased, of Fayette County, Kentucky. [Ref. Fayette County Deed Book 6]. He also purchased an additional 73 1/2 acres on Flat Creak December 6, 1805. Mary [Sinclair] Snelling died January 23, 1856. Her husband, Benjamin Snelling, followed her in death September 25, 1856 at age 90 years. They both died in Bath county, Kentucky. They were buried in the Snelling Cemetery near Reynoldsville on East Fork Road near the site of the Snelling farm in Bath County, Kentucky. Benjamin and Mary were the parents of at least ten children. The first three were born in Fayette County, the others were born in that part of Montgomery County which became Bath County after 1811.
