Biography

+James was a successful builder in Goulburn NSW Australia but ran himself into excessive debt. He went to the Ovens goldfields it is assumed to make some money to cover his debts. it was reported that whilst returning from the goldfield in Victoria he wandered off into the bushland and was waylaid and killed. That report was later cancelled. There is no written evidence of his death. His son Daniel who was with him at the time he wandered off believed James to be still alive and so advertised in a local paper about 6 mths after his disappearance requesting his father to make contact. As James left Scotland in a hurry according to family members due to debts owing it might be a case of deja vu.

Notices

Goulburn Herald and Chronicle (NSW : 1864 - 1881), Saturday 2 October 1875, page 2. [1] An old townsman, Mr. Henry Lord, with Mr. Inder, contracted for the erection of the Catholic church, which was completed about the year '48; and under the former gentleman's care many buildings have been erected since that time. The gaol and court house were built under the contract of Mr. James Sinclair, government contractor. The former building was completed in 1847, the latter in 1849. In the previous year Mr. Woodward entered the Commercial Hotel as its first landlord, where he carried on the business of hotel-keeper for many years. The Australian Store when first kept by Sam. Davis was a one-storey building, and remained so till about '45, when it was considerably enlarged, though not to such an imposing extent as at present. The old verandah building near the weighbridge and opposite the Imperial Hotel was for some time used as a private hospital.

Within the past week the whole community has been shocked by intelligence of the most barbarous and wanton murders having been committed at the Ovens by a gang of armed miscreants. In the first instance, the victim had been robbed of one of the horses belonging to his team, and upon his following and remonstrating with the robbers, they seized him, bound him to a tree, and deliberately shot him through the forehead. In the second, the same bloody tragedy was enacted, it is believed by the same band of villains, and £300 in sovereigns was the booty obtained. Both these hapless victims of lawless depravity were respectable individuals - the former, Mr. Marcus, was at one time a publican in Sydney, and the latter, Mr. James Sinclair, was a gentleman well known in Goulburn. In the third instance, the body of a man was found lying in a creek, on the road to the Woodonga, with several pistol-shot wounds in the head.
