Biography

Research Notes

Working on which Ruel she married - the one who moved to Kentucky and was head of household there in 1830 (son of Nathaniel) or the one who appears to have died before February 1802 in Virginia[1] (son of Nathaniel's brother Samuel).

The record of her 1788 marriage to Ruel shows surety as Nathaniel and minister as Nathaniel. Since the elder Rev. Nathaniel (with a son named Ruel) moved to Kentucky in 1798 and the Ruel who was son of Samuel had a brother named Nathaniel, the information does not rule out either Ruel. Clues we need: where Sarah's children were born and where she died. (I attached the profile for the Kentucky Joel to this couple, based on Ruel being in Kentucky in 1830 & that Ruel may or may not be the one who married Sarah.) ~ Noland-165, 13 September 2023.

Two Ruels:

Source for Ruel living in Kentucky in 1830 - the census for Breckenridge, KY (age 80-90).[2]
Source for Ruel, died before 1819 - the will of Elizabeth Shrewsbury of Bedford County, Virginia (widow of Samuel):[3] "...all the Right, Title, Interest and Claim which I have in Law or Equity in and to the Estate of my Son Ruel Shrewsbury Dec’d". The will names other children:
  • son Dabney Shrewsbury Dec;’d
  • sons ["son" in transcription] John, Samuel, Nathaniel, Nathan, William & Joel Shrewsbury
  • daughters Rhoda Buford and Elizabeth Turner
  • Grandson John Shrewsbury and my Grand daughter Rhoda Shrewsbury, son & daughter of my son William Shrewsbury
John Shrewsbury "gave bond and administration was granted him" on 25 October 1830.
Also, an entry about the estate of Ruel referred to in Elizabeth's will is found in Bedford County, VA court records for 11 February 1802.[4]
"Dabney Shrewsbury of Botetourt County. John Shrewsbury of Bath County. Samuel Shrewsbury of Kanawha County. John Buford and Rhoda, his wife late Rhoda Shrewsbury. Benjamin Turner and Elizabeth, his wife late Elizabeth Shrewsbury; Nathan Shrewsbury, William and Joel Shrewsbury all of Bedford County. All heirs and legatees of the estate of Ruel Shrewsbury, deceased. ..."
