Biography
William was the first of Isaac M. Singer's many children (24 by some counts), born by his first wife, Catharine Maria Haley. His father, at the time a struggling actor, moved the family to New York City when William was a baby, but spent most of his time on the road looking for acting work. While in Baltimore, he took up with Mary Ann Sponsler, and Catharine left him to return to her parents in Palmyra.
