Elizabeth (maiden name unknown/unproven) was the wife of William Kelly Sr. She passed away on 22 August 1850, in Smith Co, TN.[1][2][3]
She appears on pension records for her husband (see profile for William Kelly Sr). William's pension file provides the following, "He married November 1, 1782, Elizabeth, her maiden name not given."[1][4] It is theorized they married in Rutherford Co, NC, as William stated he was drafted in Union Co, SC. That he served two more terms there. He then moved to Rutherford Co, NC, and served a 4th term there in the fall of 1781. Information found in the file states that after his marriage, he served a tour of three months under Captain Wood and three months under his cousin, Captain John Kelly. Therefore, it is presumed he was living in Rutherford Co, NC, at the time of his marriage to Elizabeth.[4]
William stated they went on to move to Spartanburg Co, SC, then Pendleton Co, SC, before moving to McMinn Co, TN. He resided in McMinn for 9 years prior to making an application in 1831/33 for his pension. Therefore, they moved to McMinn Co, TN, in about 1824.[1]
They were enumerated in 1830 to McMinn Co, TN. William paid taxes in McMinn in 1836. From there they moved to Cass Co, GA, where William passed away on 27 December 1837.[2][1]

Parentage - See comments for issues with Singleton and/or Whiteside as alleged parents.
Conflation of three men named William Kelly - Conflation is an issue for at least three William Kellys located in GA. Two had Rev War Pension Files; one man in Cass Co, GA, and the other man in Wilkes Co, GA. The third William Kelly was in Wayne Co, GA. A pension file has not been located for William Kelly of Wayne Co, GA.
Fortunately, these men have primary records that document the names of their wives.
Son Richard Kelly - Two Richard Kellys are attached as sons of William and Elizabeth Kelly. William's pension file provides a sworn statement stating his son Richard was born in 1805. Richard "Singleton" Kelly was reportedly born in 1820. This date generates an error on WikiTree; "It's unusual for a mother's birth date (Singleton-175 born 1764) to be more than 55 years before the birth date of one of her children (Kelley-5535 born 25 Dec 1820)". Richard "Singleton" Kelly was reportedly in McMinnville, Warren Co, TN, whereas William and Elizabeth Kelly's family arrived in McMinn Co, TN, after 1822. See 1823 Map. Census records for Richard Singleton Kelley (1820-1912) indicate he was born in TN, whereas William Kelly was in SC in 1820. There are records for Richard Kelley (1805-) in McMinn Co, TN, that align with the Kelly family of McMinn Co, TN.

1. The 78 page pension file for her husband William Kelly gives no clues as to her maiden name.
2. Singleton as her maiden name is a flawed theory. A popular theory suggests her parents were Richard Singleton and Ann Whiteside. The biggest issue, Ann was about the same age as Elizabeth. Ann Whiteside and Richard Singleton reportedly married in about 1787, after the birth of their eldest child. Ann's age is determined by guardianship of her in 1781, implying she was still a minor. For full story, see attached information under Memories tab. [1]
3. Furthermore, Rutherford NC & Horry SC (coastal area) Singleton families are being mixed together. Appears there are probate records that indicate Horry Co SC Singletons remained there. This impacts Richard Singleton named above. Use caution when researching these families.
