https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/M6NT-8DQ has his date of death as 26 June 1858. Northern Times (Newcastle, NSW : 1857 - 1918), Wednesday 30 June 1858, page 2. [2] NEWCASTLE. CRONER'S INQUEST. — An inquest was held at the Commercial Hotel on Saturday last, by Dr. Knaggs, coroner, touching the death of John Singleton, whose body had been found on the North Shore on the previous day. The fact of the man being missing was mentioned In our columns at the time. The evidence taken by at the inquest was very voluminous, of when the following are the particulars. On the 11th instant deceased and James Morris left Tomago in a small boat for Newcastle; on their way down they drank rum three or four times, until Singleton became sick and refused to take any more; they arrived at Newcastle about eight o'clock ,in the evening; at the wharf Morris drank more rum; about 9 o'clock they were seen at the bar of Rome's Hotel, where Singleton had a glass of ginger beer, he was then sober, but Morris, being very tipsy, was refused drink by the landlord, they however took half-a-pint of rum with them and shortly after went away. Morris appears to have lost all recollec-tion from the time of landing in Newcastle, until he found himself lying in the bottom of the boat, and the boat on shore, this would he somewhere about mid-night. He then pushed off, and on the boat getting on the flats he lay down and went to sleep, until he was awoke in the morning by the steamer passing up the river — it was then daylight; he found Singleton's hat in the bottom of the boat together with tho half-pint of rum they had brought with them from Newcastle. He then returned and made every enquiry after his companion — he also informed the police. The body was not found until the 25th and from having been. in the water such a length of time was much decomposed, but was identified by his brother. Dr. Stacy deposed to having examined the body; he observed no external marks of violence on it, and stated the blackness of the face would be likely to be caused bv drowning. It was shown at the inquest that deceased and Morris had always been upon good terms with each other, and there is no doubt but that he had accidentally fallen overboard while his companion was senseless. The jury returned a verdict accordingly.
