DEATH

Mr. H. Singleton, a very highly respected resident of Upper Meroo, died in a private hospital in Mudgee on Wednesday evening, aged 64 years. The funeral took place to Upper Meroo this afternoon, the Rev. L. Walker performing the last sad rites at the graveside. Mr. J. C. Swords had charge of the arrangements.

Research Notes

Despite being named on Henry's Death Registration, the evidence supporting William Singleton (1805 - 1883) being his father is somewhat uncertain. Firstly, he is not so named on Henry's Birth Registration, despite his parents having then been married for around 19 years. Further, it is understood that his parents parted some time after the family moved to around Mudgee in the 1850's.

It is perhaps most likely that William is named as Henry's father either in error, or with the understanding that that was correct, rather than it being done purposefully to 'legitimise' his birth.

The fact that the Birth registration is in the family name, not the maiden name of the mother has some weight.
