Biography

Charles Crawther was born in 1851, the eldest son of Eleanor and James. James was a Dairyman and Charles' Grandfather had been a 'gentleman'

Charles mother passed away in 1855 and his father in December 1861, leaving Charles and younger brother George orphans. Their uncle William, James' twin brother was their legal guardian.

in 1861 census Charles was in the Royal Asylum of the St Anne Society Schools: The school was to house and educate children whose parents had seen better days and have moved in a superior station in life but have now hit hard times. (presumably when his mother died and his father is unwell).
