Biography

G. Spyres Singleton, born in 1788 in South Carolina, the son of a farmer but a learned man who valued education for his children as much as he did for himself. Spyres, upon marrying, accepted quite a few books from his father as wedding gifts. He married Lucinda WHITESIDES™ on April 30, 1809, in Christian, Kentucky. The books came in handy as in his short life, they had nine children in 12 years. Unfortunately he died as a young father in August 1822 in Pope, Illinois, at the age of 34. But those books came in handy. As a few of his children went off to college, one at the University of Pennsylvania and became a doctor and published medical researcher. (Family Story:Jacqueline K. SINGLETON, George Spiers was the son of George Singleton, of N.C. He married LUCINDA WHITESIDES of Christian co., Ky., and settled in Illinois, where he died, leaving a widow and 8 children. Her brother, James Whitesides, took her and the children to Montgomery Co., Missouri, where he had a home and attended to their needs until the children were grown. At his death, James, their uncle, left most of his property to them.
