I’ve traced Cyr origins in Montreal, Quebec and New Brunswick under the Acadian Clan where in both area the name was spelled Cyr, Sire, Le Sire, Syre, Sirre, just to name a few but my main interest is in Montreal, André Le Sire, who departed from La Rochelle in France to Nouvelle-France in 1668. He was hired as a labourer and slate-layer for the Compagnie des Indes Occidentales by Pierre Gaigneur, a merchant in La Rochelle, who hired him for a period of thirty six months at a salary of 70 livres a year. This contract mentioned that he was from Fontenay-Le-Compte in Poitou (Vendée),[1][2] his parents Pierre Sire and Jeanne Metayer were married in the church of Notre-Dame on August 23, 1626,[3] meaning that André was born after 1628; he had a brother Pierre and a sister Marie.[4][5]
Once his contract ended in 1671 in Nouvelle-France, he set out to Saint-Ours were he cleared a piece of land and built his house and in 1673 he bought 60 acres of land in Sorel, André in 1675 went to the Jesuit at La Prairie, to receive the sacrament of confirmation,[6] in March 6th, 1678 he was named godfather to André Ethier son of Léonard and Isabelle Godion and the same year September 5th, witness to the marriage of Jacques Chevalier with Jeanne Vilair. We know that he was married before December 18th, 1679 to Elisabeth Charbonneau because Elisabeth was the godmother of Charles Labelle son of Guillaume with Anne Charbonneau in Repentigny which stated that she was the wife of André Sire. The following years, André and Elisabeth had four boys and a girl, François March 5, 1681, Jean Baptiste June 19, 1682, Joseph March 22, 1687, Michel April 24, 1689 and Marie December 4, 1684 all born on Île Jésus and baptised either in Repentigny or Lachenaie. Note: André Cyr/Sire died at the hands of the Iroquois in a subsequent attack to that done on Lachine, he was on Île Jésus. He was not part of the Lachine massacre. There were attacks done on Lachine first, then on Pointe-aux-Trembles and Lachenaie and various surrounding places. The battle of la Coulée Grou happened in 1690.[9]
