Maj Sjöwall was born on September 25, 1935 in Skeppsholm, Stockholm. Her parents were Will Sjövall and Margit Trobäck.[1]
She was a Swedish author, journalist and translator. She was well known for co-writing several crime books along with her partner Per Wahlöö, best known stories might very well be the ones about detective Martin Beck. There have been 38 films based on the characters, with actor Peter Haber as Martin Beck between 1997 and 2018.
She was first married in 1955–1958 to editor Gunnar Isaksson (1915–1983) and second time 1959–1962 with photographer Hans J Flodquist (1912–1987), son of the physician Lars Flodquist.
She met Per Wahlöö in the summer of 1962, and had a 13 year long relationship with him up until his death in 1975. The couple never married as Per was already married when they met.
She was dubbed "The Queen of Crime" by the newspaper The Guardian which includes in their article about Maj many wonderful details of her life.[2]
She died on April 29, 2020 after a long struggle with health problems.
