Biography

Private Gus Skelton served in the United States Civil War.
Enlisted: Apr 14, 1864
Mustered out: Sep 1864
Side: CSA
Regiment(s): Co. K, 1st Reg't. South Carolina Cavalry

Born on 12 Apr 1846 in Anderson County, South Carolina, Gus was a son of Archibald Skelton and Mary Williford.[1]

He fought for the Confederacy, enlisting at the age of 18. As a private in 1st Regiment, South Carolina Cavalry, Company K, he spent most of his time driving cattle. [2][3]

He lived most of his life as a farmer, like his father before him. On 27 Jan 1870, Gus married Susannah Elizabeth Roof[4], and they had nine children: five sons and four daughters.

  1. Claud Eugene (1871-1945)
  2. George B. (1873-1886)
  3. Lena M. (1875-1903)
  4. Annie Talula (1878-1954)
  5. Wallie B. (1881-1902)
  6. Joseph Augustus (1885-1969)
  7. John Calhoun (1888-1943)
  8. Sudie M. (1891-1979)
  9. Samuel Fant (1894-1960)

Gus and Susan lived all of their lives in Anderson County, living first in Fork, then Varennes (where the present-day town of Starr is located).[5]

In his last years, Gus may have lived with various family members. In 1920, he was living with his daughter, Annie Norris, and her family in Rock Mills Township, Anderson County.[6]

Gus died in Polk County, Georgia, perhaps at the home of another one of his children. He died on 9 May 1926; he and Susan are both buried in Roberts Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Anderson, S.C.[7]
