He fought for the Confederacy, enlisting at the age of 18. As a private in 1st Regiment, South Carolina Cavalry, Company K, he spent most of his time driving cattle. [2][3]
He lived most of his life as a farmer, like his father before him. On 27 Jan 1870, Gus married Susannah Elizabeth Roof[4], and they had nine children: five sons and four daughters.

Gus and Susan lived all of their lives in Anderson County, living first in Fork, then Varennes (where the present-day town of Starr is located).[5]
In his last years, Gus may have lived with various family members. In 1920, he was living with his daughter, Annie Norris, and her family in Rock Mills Township, Anderson County.[6]
Gus died in Polk County, Georgia, perhaps at the home of another one of his children. He died on 9 May 1926; he and Susan are both buried in Roberts Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Anderson, S.C.[7]
