John was thrice married and purportedly had children by all three wives. His third wife Patsey Stepp was only 18 or 19 years old when they married. The 1860 Census shows them living at Harlan with newborn Elizabeth[1].
After John died, Martha remarried to William Saylor. [2]. Daughter Nancy appears to have gone by the name Saylor [3].

Enslaved Persons
Deeded from Henry to son John on 26 October 1810 [4]
In 1810, John's father (Henry Skidmore) "for love and affection" and $100, gave him 9 slaves, including the giant Swan, who weighed 350 pounds and who in 1790 saved the lives of two Hamblen boys during an Indian raid into Lee County. When Indians had attacked Fort Blackmore, killing the wife of Henry Hamblen, Swan saved two of her sons, Charles and John, although the Indians carried off the 10-year-old brother Champ. Champ was taken to Canada where he was ransomed by a French trader and taken to Quebec. From there he was able to sail to Norfolk and made his way back to Fort Blackmore. ...On 8 September 1820, John Skidmore emancipated Swan and his wife Sally (aged about 57 and 40 years) in consideration of their past service "as far-fourth as the Laws of Virginia will allow." Swan and Sally took for themselves the surname Hamilton, and settled on a small farm near Jonesville in Lee County.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:
As a member of the US Black Heritage Project, I have added a list of the slaves owned by John Skidmore on this profile with categories using the standards of the US Black Heritage Exchange Program. This helps us connect enslaved ancestors to their descendants. See the Heritage Exchange Portal for more information.
Skidmore-662 and Skidmore-521 appear to represent the same person because: Hi. This profile seems to be an amalgamation of a couple of individuals. I do not think Jerome Skidmore is the same as John Skidmore. There is John Skidmore that married Mary Noe and had the three children you have listed here. I suggest a merge. Also, I would suggest you take the parents and dates from the Skidmore-662 and you remove the middle name Jerome. Jerome should be added seperately as a new person.
