Betty Ann (Skillen) Johnston was born in Ireland.

'Betty' Ann Skillen was born about 1843. She was also known as Betty Annie Skillen and Eliza Ann.

William Johnstone (20) and Betty Ann Skillen (21) were married in Tullylish Parish Church on the outskirts of Gilford on 22 April 1865, At the time of his marriage William was a labourer. Fathers Thomas Johnstone (weaver) & James Skillen (labourer). Witnesses John & Eliza Malcolmson.[1]

They had 6 children,

Thomas (b 1866),
John Malcomson (b 1868),
James (b 1869),
Eliza (b 1871),
Anne (b 1873)
Mary Jane (b 1875).

By John's birth the family are living in Gilford and at James's birth William is a servant. By Eliza's birth he is recorded as a mill-worker but 2 years later at Anne's birth he is again a servant. In the late 1870s the family moved to the nearby market town of Portadown in County Armagh

In 1901 the Johnston family lived at 2 Shillington Street, Portadown, County Armagh, Ireland.[2] William Johnston (54) General Labourer, wife Elizabeth Ann Johnston (59) with unmarried children, James Johnston (30) Railway Gate Keeper and Mary Jane Johnston (25) Spinning Mill Flax Spreader, all born in County Down & Church of Ireland.

She passed away in 1907, aged 64, of cardiac disease, the wife of a labourer. Daughter Annie Thornton was present at her death.[3]
