Biography

Edwin Skinner was born in Blackwood, Victoria, the son of a goldminer. When he reached working age an uncle told him that he had to learn the bootmaking trade as he was the eldest boy of that generation of Skinners - it was his duty. A vain young man, Edwin considered that he had a prominent upper lip so he grew a moustache to conceal it which he wore his whole life. While working as a bootmaker in a factory in Ngaruawahia he met Elizabeth Caraman (from Onehunga) who was employed as a machinist at the factory. They married and settled in Waihi where they brought up a family of six children (plus one died young). Theirs was a very musical family, with many musical instruments, some fine stringed ones made by Edwin's own hands. When the children were young, Edwin, with help from his brothers, built a fine home in Bradford Street, Waihi. In the cold winters of the 1930's depression years, if he should see a child barefoot, the next day he would knock on the mother's door and hand over a brand new pair of shoes, no charge.
