Notes about Charles Skinner

Excerpt from the "Skinner of Hartford" genealogy - by Wes Skinner

The family immigrated to New Brunswick shortly after they were married and about 5 years later sold their land to Loyalists and moved to Colchester Co., Nova Scotia. Later they moved to Kings County, Nova Scotia (ref. Isabel Palmeter)

The "Christian Messenger" dated Apr. 14, 1848 in Sarah's obituary says that both Sarah and Charles were born and married in Martha's Vineyard. The obituary of Sarah Osborn Skinner as found in the "Christian Messenger" (1), an early Baptist magazine, read: died 15 Jan, 1848 in Cornwallis, Mrs. Sarah Skinner in her 88th year, daughter of the late Samuel Osborne of Martha's Vineyard, US. They moved to Casco, Me., to NB, then to NS. Born 22 July 1760. Married in New Brunswick at age 16 to Charles Skinner, native of Connecticut. Leaves 8 sons, 7 daughters, 113 Grandchildren, 60 great-grandchildren. Late W.A. Chipman was a brother-in-law. Edward Manning and George Dimock sons- in-law. Rev. I.E. Bill married a granddaughter

  • The above information is contradictory as to place of marriage. Records found for marriage in Martha's Vineyard, not New Brunswick.

Doris Gates, a family member, sent the following email today with information about the wedding place:

Charles Skinner was an ancestor of mine. He did marry Sarah Osborn in 1774, but that marriage took place at Passamaquoddy this is the name of a bay near St. Andrew's, New Brunswick, on the border with Maine, but in 1774, that was still a part of Nova Scotia (New Brunswick was split off following the Revolutionary War). They lived for a time near Maugerville, New Brunswick, and then moved to Cornwallis Township, Nova Scotia. Charles and Sarah had 15 children, one of whom was my ancestor Ann Skinner Lyons.

Thank you to Doris. Submitted by Beth Babcock
