INFORMATION from a Relative of Dr Alexander SKINNER: Preface to her book "The Sugar Doctor", by Lois Shepheard.
"Previous research portrayed him only as a Doctor but I could see he must have had other occupations, since he wavered on and off the NSW and Victorian Medical Registers. He bought huge tracts of NSW land and I wondered why. I asked myself how he would have been a doctor in the Phillipines which was at the time under Spanish rule. It wasn't until the descendants of one of his servants contacted me and told me Dr Skinner had been a sugar grower, that I began to understand."

1899 - Obituary
At Airlie Brake on Wednesday last there passed away one of our oldest and most respected residents in the person of Dr. Alexander Skinner, at the venerable age of 88 years, of senile decay. The deceased medico had been in the colony for something like 40 years, the greater part of which lie spent in this district, where he leaves an aged widow, and a large circle of relatives to whom we extend our sincere sympathy. As far back as 1832 the departed doctor obtained his diploma at the University of Glasgow, and he was therefore the oldest qualified doctor in the colony. His first appointment was as surgeon on a whaling cruise in the seas north of Scotland. After this he came to New South Wales and practised at Muswellbrook for some years, when he was induced to try his fortune among the Spaniards at Manilla in the Philippines, the scene of one of the recent engagements between the American and Spanish squadrons. At this place the doctor is said to have benefitted himself very considerably in a financial way, as he built up a most lucrative practice, but seeking a more congenial clime made his way to Melbourne, and thence to Glen Innes, and finally to Inverell, where he resided for many years in active work until his human faculties began to wane under the severe strain of his large practice and ripening age. The deceased gentleman was at one time a large station holder in the east of the colony, and took a lively interest in all matters of public concern. He was also an Elder of the Presbyterian Church, and a man of sterling character and a most charitable disposition in cases calling for leniency or benevolence. In all the paths of life the late doctor afforded a valuable example to all those with whom he came in contact. The services at the graveside were conducted by the Rev. E. R. Makin, and the interments took place in the Presbyterian portion of the cemetery.
