Biography

William, son of William Skyles and his first wife (said to be Cherokee), was born about 1770 at Maryland[1][2][3] and probably died in 1852 at Bledsoe or Hamilton County, Tennessee, while enroute to Missouri.[4][5]

Sometime before 1799, William must have married the mother of his oldest son William. Child by unknown spouse:

He married second on 15 Oct 1801, at Greene County, TN, Elizabeth MILLER, (b. 1783, m. 15 Oct 1801, d. before 1850), daughter of Peter MILLER and Mary BROYLES.[6] Children by Elizabeth MILLER:

He appeared on the tax rolls of Chucky tract, Greene County, TN, in 1798 among the taxables of Captain James Penny's company as William Skiles Jr with 600 acres and 1 white poll.[3][7]

He appeared on the tax rolls of Greene County, TN, in 1805.[8]

He served during the War of 1812 circa 1812 in the company of Capt James Sandifer in a Regiment of East Tennessee Mounted Spies. He enlisted at Madison in Bledsoe Co, TN, and received bounty land in 1850, 1852 and 1855 for his service.[9][10]

The 1830 census of Washington County, TN, listed William Skiles with 1 male under 5 (grson?), 1 male 5-9 (grson?), 1 male 15-19 (Peter), 1 male 50-59 (himself), 2 females 10-15 (Rebecca, Jane), 1 female 15-19 (Susan), and 1 female 40-49 (wife).[11]

The 1840 census of Greene County, TN, listed William Skiles with 1 male under 5, 1 male 5-9, 1 male 10-14, 1 male 60-69 (himself), 1 female under 5, 1 female 20-29 , and 1 female 50-59 (wife Elizabeth). The female 20-29 might be a widowed daughter and the 2 youngest boys might be her sons.[12]

The 1850 census of Eastern Disctrict, Bledsoe County, TN, listed William Skiles (80, b. VA) living with his sister Elizabeth and her husband Daniel Bowman.[13]

Skyles-86 and Skiles-257 appear to represent the same person because: They have the same birth and death years and places. The surname was spelled both Skyles and Skiles--not sure which should be used. I'm not aware of a middle name George. William's father was William, but his mother cannot be Ann Murphy since he was born before they married in 1778. Please merge and retain the bio of Skiles-257.
