Biography

Samuel was born either late1849 or early 1850. He is the son of John W Slack and Jane James.

Unfortunately, I currently have very little source information on Samuel. Some genealogists have Samuel as "John Samuel." I've seen him married to Emeline C. Matheny (m. 5 June 1872, Kanawha Co., WV) or Emma Louise Douglas (m. 21 March 1880, Kanawha County, WV) or both. Records of one or more John Slacks, of the appropriate age, do marry both women in those years, but there is no information on these documents as to his parents.

Nor can I find the death record or gravestone of Samuel. Some genealogies have his death as 1883, Kanawha County.

Research NOTES:

The birth of Nora C. Slack in October of 1874 puts this family in the Little Sandy District of Kanawha County.

Michael Matheny was present at his daughter's marriage to Samuel. She was 17. Although the marriage date is usually given as 5 June, this may be wrong: the certificate of marriage was issued on that date, but the date of marriage does not appear on the record.

The Birth Record of Cora Jane Slack is informative. It gives her father's birthplace as Quick, Kanawha Co., WV, which is very near Elkview and Mill Creek. His occupation is given as "Teamster," meaning that he drove horses. Oddly, Cora Jane Slack was born in Roane County, WV., a singularity for this family. Her Death Certificate (1964) is incorrect in giving her middle name (rather than maiden name) as Slack. It also gives her father's middle initial as "S." which may or may not be correct. He mother was Emma (Douglas) Slack. She's buried at Hunter Cemetery on Elk Two Mile, Kanawha Co., WV.

Samuel Morris, nephew of Samuel Slack by America (James) Morris, was also a teamster, as was Samuel Wilber Slack, son of Samuel Slack and Emma (Douglas). At the time of Cora Jane's birth the family was at Kettle, Kan. Co.

16 Nov 1882 Samuel Slack and Emma L. Slack had a child Samuel W. Slack. (This somewhat contradicts his Death Certificate, which puts his birthday as 13 Nov 1883)

Birth records for the children of John Slack (son of Jane Hamilton (James) Slack) seem to dry up after 1882.

Unless there were two John Slacks b.c. 1850/51 in Kanawha County at the same time, it appears as if John was twice married as genealogists have maintained.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Samuel by comparing test results with other carriers of his ancestors' Y-chromosome or mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Samuel:
