Biography
Nelson was born in 1843. He is the son of Roswell Slack and Parmelia McCurtie. He passed away in 1917. [1]
Nelson was enlisted in Union Army 13 Regiment Kalamazoo, MI company K. December 14th, 1861 at age 19. Mustered out Jan 17, 1862,

I believe there was a son Mint, born around 1870, died in 1932. Does anyone have information on him?

I haven't found Nelson in the 1870 census; based on birth information for his children he was in Illinois from 1868 when Christopher Columbus was born through 1883 when Susannah was born. The rest of the children were reportedly born in Michigan.

Nelson's death certificate says he was born Aug 14, 1843 in New York. Some genealogies give Junius, Seneca County as his place of birth, but I don't have any information to prove this. He died in Comstock, Kalamazoo County, Michigan on Dec 3, 1917 of senility, code 154. Death certificate shows his father as Rosswell Slack, mother unknown. His mother was Parmilia, called Millie, last name in question. Death certificates for Nelson's siblings show their mother's maiden name as Lee, Curtis, McCurdy, Ogden and Caswell. Based on the 1900 census he married about 1866 Sarah Elizabeth Hardesta or Hardesty. Her death certificate gives her parents as W Hardesta and unknown Simms.
