Donald Slade is Notable.

Donald Slade was born in Freemantle, Hampshire on 26 November 1888. His birth was registered in South Stoneham in the first quarter of 1889[1]. He was the son of George Slade and Mary Ann Mabey.

At the time of the 1891 England and Wales Census, George, Mary Ann, George William, Florence, Amelia, Frederick, Charloote, Frank, Donald, and Ralph Slade were listed as living in Freemantle[2][3].

After attending Foundry Lane school, around 1910, he worked as a bricklayer and played as an amateur for the Southampton Ramblers. Younger brother, Reg,[4] was also on the books of Southampton, making three appearances in 1915.

He transfered to Lincoln City, Lincolnshire in August 1912; Woolwich Arsenal in Islington, London in December 1913; May 1914 he was playing in Fulham, London. He stayed in London until the suspension of normal football caused by WWI[5].

During the war Donald returned to Southampton, where he worked in Harland and Wolff's rolling mills, maintaining the brick linings of the furnaces.[5] Harland & Wolff Heavy Industries is a heavy industrial company, specialising in ship repair, conversion, and offshore construction, located in Belfast, Northern Ireland. FYI - they built the Titanic.[6]

In the fall of 1915 he married Nellie C Piper in Southampton, Hampshire. [7]

After the war, he moved to Scotland where he had spells with Dumbarton, Ayr United and Dundee United. Donald became very popular in Scotland.[5]

He retired from football in 1923 and became the manager of a pub in Troon until 1927.[5] Troon is a town in South Ayrshire, situated on the west coast of Ayrshire in Scotland, about 8 miles (13 km) north of Ayr and 3 miles (5 km) northwest of Glasgow Prestwick Airport.[8]

Around 1927 he returned south of the border to run pubs in Reading, Flackwell, Heath, and Beaconsfield before retiring to live in Marlow.[5]

He eventually returned to Hampshire, living in the West End, just outside Southampton.

Donald died in the West End on 24 March 1980, at the age of 91. His death was registered in Southampton in the first quarter of 1980[9].
