George Lane Slade was christened on 9 June 1839 in Withington, Gloucestershire, the son of Thomas and Emily Slade.[1]
He married Eliza Ireland in 1861 in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire,[2] and they had six children: Mary Ann, John, Joseph, Ann, Eliza, and Emily, and the family lived in Lydney where George worked as a farm labourer.[3] While still in Lydney, George later became a highway labourer.[4]
