Biography

Rebecca Slade was born in 1856 in Coleshill, near Amersham, Buckinghamshire. [1] She was the daughter of Henry Slade, an agricultural labourer, and Maria Harris. She was christened on 11 May 1856 in Amersham. [2]

Rebecca was the youngest child of four. By 1861, when she was four years old, her father had died. Her mother, a lacemaker, was bringing up her children on her own. Times were tough: Rebecca’s ten year old sister was already working with her mother in the lace making trade. [3]

She married Charles Lane, an agricultural labourer, in 1874. Neither were yet 20. [4]

Charles and Rebecca had at least ten children: Charles Henry (1875), George Edward (1877), Louisa Mary (1879), Frederick William (1881), Eva Beatrice Emma (1883), Ellen May (1885), Alec James Diego (1887), Frank William Arthur (1889), Harry Albert (1891), and Annie Maria (1893).

The family lived in Norwoods Yard and Bury End.

In the 1881 and 1891 census Rebecca is recorded as a straw plaiter. This was a common occupation for women and children in Buckinghamshire in the nineteenth century. Applications included hats, mats, and thatching for rooves. A skilled straw plaiter could earn more in a day than a labourer. [5]

In 1911 she is recorded as a shopkeeper and head of the household , although still married. Living with her are Frank, Harry, and Annie, as well as her Eva, now Eva Strange, and Eva’s two year old son Alex. [6]

In 1915 her address was 8 London Road, Amersham. This is the address that her son Alec, who served in France with the Canadian Expeditionary Forces, had his pay sent to. [7]
