Biography

John and wife Jane Henry lived at Mackenny, Kildress, County Tyrone.

They moved to the neighbouring townland of Gortin, Derryloran later in life.

He passed away 15 May 1888 at Gortin, Derryloran. He was a widower "age 80", although ages were often visual estimates for this period. The informant was Hugh McCulloch, relieving officer. [1]

Research Notes

Surname spelling

The family name was spelt Slane in the Tithe Applotment Book and the 1766 Census. In the civil registration Slane and Sloan are used interchangeably.

Children

Silas and Eliza Jane's Australia death records both name parents as John Sloan / Jane Henry. And we are presuming that Sarah is also daughter of the same parents since the Sloan/Slane name is quite uncommon for the region and there was only one such household at Mackenny in the 1826 tithe applotment.

Death record match

I matched this death record because it is at the same townland as Jane (Henry) Slane (abt.1808-1886), who died "married" (not "widow") and this death is later.

Older records

In the 1766 Kildress census there are three Slanes of Mackenny: Daniel, Hugh and John (all Protestant).

In the 1826 Tithe Applotment Book for Kildress there is only one Slane (or variants): Hugh.

In Griffith's Valuation (about 1859) for Mackenny, there are two Slanes: Silas, and John. They are neighbours.

No members of this family found in PRONI Will Calendars.

The conclusion I draw from these records is that the 1766 John was a different person; and this John may have been living with Hugh in 1826 (hence, not a leaseholder of his own). Suggesting John may be the son of Hugh -- although he could equally well be a brother.

The 1859 Griffith's John may or may not be this same person.

Other John Slane

John Slane (abt.1808-1854) seems to be a different person - on Familysearch world tree he has a list of children not compatible with Sarah and Silas.
