Sarah Harriet Slater was born around about 1848-1851, most likely in Cambridgeshire, England. She is the daughter of George Pung Slater and Sarah Cambridge.
1851 CENSUS - West Street, Village of Comberton, Cambridgeshire. Sarah Harriet Slater is two years old, born Toft, Cambridgeshire. Her father, George Pung Slater, is a 31-year-old Baker, employing one boy. He was born Haverhill, Suffolk. Her mother, Sarah, is shown as 33, born Meldreth, Cambs. On the next page of the enumeration schedule are Sarah, 2, her sister, Agnes, 1, born Comberton, and a House Servant, 14-year-old Lydia Collett. [1]
By 1854, they are on the other side of the world. There the deaths of Sarah's mother and a new baby brother are registered in the Colony of Victoria. The following year, her father married a widow and their family continued to expand.
In 1870, still in Victoria, Sarah married Thomas Gorton [2]
BDM Vic records 6 children between 1871 and 1884, being Sarah Agnes, Louisa Eliz, Annie Helena, George Thomas, Sarah Frances and Eva Grace. George Thomas died in 1953.
Sarah Harriet Gorton passed away in 1886. Her death was registered Portland, Colony of Victoria, with her age recorded as 35 years, and her parents George (no surname given) and mother as Sarah Cambridge, her husband being Thomas Gorton. [4]
