Biography

Gelon was born in the first quarter of 1851. He was the son of Samuel Slater and Mary Ann B. Slater.

In the English Census of 1851 in Derby St. Peter, Derbyshire, Samuel is married to a Mary A B, aged 29, who was born it says in America Quebec. One son is listed: Gelon, one month of age. Samuel is a bootmaker, born in Derby, aged 30, living at 60 St. Peter St.

In 1853, Samuel Smith Slater is born.

In 1855, Mary Ann, 33, emigrated to Canada via New York with Gelon, 4, Samuel, 0 yr, and sister-in-law Eliza Slater, age 26. They arrived on Oct 6, 1855 from Liverpool aboard the ship Cuttwater.

Once in London, two more boys are born; John in 1856 and Richard in 1859.

Gelon's mother, Mary Ann, is not mentioned again after the birth of Richard in 1859. She may have died but no death certificate has been found at this point.

In 1870, Gelon's father, Samuel, 45, marries Honorah Brophy, age 21, who becomes the step mother to Samuel's four children.

Canada Census 1871: Samuel as head, Honorah, wife, four children; Gelon, 19, a stone mason, Samuel, 17, a blacksmith, John, 14, a clerk, and Richard, 11.

Gelon married Jessie G. Spence, a Scottish born lady, on Apr 10, 1875 in London, Ontario. [1] He worked as a marble carver. Together they had four girls, three of whom were born in London, Ontario. The last girl was born in Detroit, Michigan. The family moved there in 1879. They stayed for a few years but returned to London and was definitely listed in the city directory in 1884 until 1890 a year after Gelon's death. The family was living at 23 Palace St. between 1886 to 1889. Gelon had worked for T.J. Heard Co. as a marble carver. He passed away in 1889.

Gell was mentioned on a memorial in Mount Pleasant Cemetery and Crematorium, London, Middlesex County, Ontario, Canada with a death date of 7 May 1889.[2] The inscription reads: Husband of Jessie S, 38 years, 2 months.

Jessie, remained in London for awhile and then returned to live and raise the children in Detroit where she remarried.
