Daniel Jackson Slayden was born about 1832 in Virginia.[1][2] He was the son of Daniel Slayden [1] and Martha Grant. Note, some records show his surname as Sladen and Slaton.
In the 1850 U.S. Census, he was enumerated 17 October as Jackson Sladen, age 18, employed as a laborer, living in Pocahontas County, Virginia, with his father Daniel and other family members.[1] Ten years later, Danl J Slaton was recorded as 28-years old, living in P.O. Traveller's Repose, Pocahontas, Virginia in the household of Washington Nottingham.[2]
Conversations and correspondence between Clinton Slayton and descendant Twila Phillips, suggest that he was probably shot by Confederate pickets, while serving in the Confederate Army, with a brother who may have been well-known for scouting for the Union (this may not have been a accident). This Daniel J is possibly the man who served in the 31st Virginia Infantry, CSA, recruited at Green Bank, VA (West Virginia), and shot by Confederate pickets Aug 4, 1864.
It has been presumed by other researchers that he might have married a Nottingham daughter, proof is still being sought, but any marriage or children might have occurred between the 1860 and 1870 census.
