Biography

The Death Date is a rough estimate. See the text for details.
William Slaton was a Georgian.
This profile is part of the Slaton Name Study.

William Moses Slaton was born on April 3rd, 1832 in Richmond County, Georgia to Elias Slaton and Mary B. Newman. [1] He received a private school education before learning the skills of a blacksmith, according to a biographical sketch published during his lifetime. [1] No known documents reference the names "William" and "Moses" simultaneously. Early (conjectured) records for this man show the usage of Moses, but he is consistently seen as "William M." later in life.

A Moses Slaton married Elizabeth Edge in Newton County, Georgia in November 1849. [2] In the following year, a Mary Slaton (presumed to be William M.'s mother Mary) headed a household #802 in Henry County, Georgia. [3] An 18-year-old Slaton male with first initial "M" was enumerated on the subsequent page in household #807 with a similarly-aged female with initial "E. H." [4] Note that Henry and Newton County share a border. Wesley Miller (genealogist) posits that the Newton County marriage and 1850 Census records pertain to William Moses Slaton, who is represented by this profile.

In 1854 William Moses emigrated from Georgia to Clark County, Arkansas, [1] but he married Martha Ann Matthews (nee Dowdell) in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama in 1857 on October 9th [5] or 10th [6] (sources disagree). The following children were born to their union: Amanda W., James Riley, David Henry, Sarah "Sally," and George W. Slaton. There were additional children that died in infancy.[1]

William served as a private for the Confederacy during the Civil War.[1]

In 1875 the Slatons moved to Sevier County, Arkansas, and by 1880 they were farming in Red Colony Township.[1] [7]

In 1896 William married Mrs. Elizabeth Allen (nee Long) in Sevier County. [8] He was listed as a resident of the Lockesburg community within Red Colony, where they were enumerated in the 1900 Census with daughter Sarah S. [9]

William was in ill health when he published his Last Will and Testament on June 17th, 1908. His will was filed for record under W. M. Slayton on July 28th and recorded on November 10th of the same year, suggesting a death date between June 17th and July 28th. [10]

William's grave marker corroborates the year of death as 1908. [11]

Research Needs

1860 and 1870 census for this couple is still being sought. The biography referred to earlier suggests Clark County, Arkansas, if accurate, but some confederate veterans are thought to have avoided the 1870 federal census.[1]
